Post-graduate program, for counselling and social work graduates, to specialise in relationship counselling. Get equipped to recognise and respond to crisis situations including family and domestic violence.

Online, with a fully coordinated and supported in-person 50-hour work placement in semester three.

The Federal Government’s Labour Market Insights estimates that the demand for family and marriage counsellors will be very strong over the next five years.

Graduates will be qualified to work in a variety of family relationship specialist roles.

What to Expect From This Diploma

This course will equip you with the clinical skills, knowledge and confidence to provide advice and support to those struggling with relationship issues. You’ll learn to:

Apply the principles of structured, impartial, non-judgemental, respectful counselling

Apply a full range of proven therapy techniques to assist couples and families
03
Recognise and respond to crisis situations, and to evidence of family violence, parenting stress, mental health issues, loss and grief, and child harm
04
Work effectively with more than one client in the room
05
Understand the legal and ethical considerations applying to relationship counselling
06
Work effectively within a case management and clinical supervision framework

Fully Supported Work Placement

As part of this diploma, we offer a fully-supported 50-hour work placement program. This allows students to apply their learnt theories and frameworks into practice under the supervision of experienced counsellors and practitioners. Students can complete their placement in one of the following Relationships Australia NSW centres:

  • Broadmeadow
  • Dee Why
  • Sydney CBD
  • Illawarra
  • Macquarie Park
  • Parramatta
  • Penrith
  • Bathurst.

Applications are now open for our 2025 intake, starting on 3 July 2025. This intake will be delivered remotely, with online learning and workshop modules. A face-to-face 50-hour placement is required. 

Please note, the Victoria branch is the registered training organisation for this program. NSW placements will be located in Sydney.
